Your wooden surfboard your way !
One of the best things about making your own surfboard is getting to choose exactly how it looks. From the shape and size through to the timber pattern, every board becomes a reflection of the person who makes it. A wooden surfboard isn’t just something you ride, it’s something you create.
At Bywater Surf we offer a range of deck skin patterns using paulownia, cedar and pinstripes. They’re classic combinations that don’t date and always look good in and out of the water.

If you like things clean and simple, an all paulownia board with a single centre pinstripe is a great choice. Light, fresh and understated. If you’re leaning more old school, boards with cedar outer panels, a paulownia centre and three pinstripes are a long time favourite and always turn heads.
We really encourage everyone to make their board their own. If you’ve got something specific in mind, just let us know. There are more variations in timber patterns than most people expect, and we’re always happy to explore custom ideas.
Many of our deck patterns can be reversed too, swapping the paulownia and cedar around for a different look. Most boards end up nicely symmetrical, but there’s no rule that says they have to be. Asymmetrical patterns can look just as good.

If you want to see what people are making in our classes, take a look at @bywatersurf on Instagram. Every board is different and each one tells its own story.
If you’ve already got a board pattern in mind, we’d love to hear about it. Let’s make it happen.
