Winter swells and steamer days - What we are riding this season.

Winter swells and steamer days - What we are riding this season.

Goodbye summer, goodbye autumn — hello winter. It might not be everyone’s favorite season, but we’re here for the cooler vibes (and let’s be honest, less sweat).

Winter means better swells, so it’s time to shake off the dust and pull out your steamer.

Brisker water temps bring ideal offshore winds, punchy groundswells, and those stunning clear winter waters.

Nothing beats wrapping your hands around a hot coffee after a cold-water session and with fewer crowds, winter’s got its own magic. Offshore winds smooth out the ocean’s surface, giving you beautifully groomed waves that are irresistible whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been surfing for decades.

With water temps sitting around 18–22°C (which counts as warm elsewhere!), the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast light up with perfect waves all winter long.

Sure, dragging yourself out of bed when it’s cold can be a mission — but trust us, there’s nothing quite like watching the sunrise from your board.

So, what are we riding from the Bywater Surf workshop this winter?

On the smaller 1–3’ days, you can’t go past the timeless 9’6” Rose  a classic 1960s Pig shape with an old-school Hatchet fin, made for graceful nose rides and stylish trim.

But when the swell picks up to 3–6’, we’re reaching for the 5’8” Gould modern Fish, perfect for those roundhouse turns and silky bottom turns.

Here’s to crisp mornings, clean waves, and the kind of winter sessions that stick with you long after you’ve dried off.
