Inside our Bywater Surf Board Making Classes

The Bywater Surf workshop comes to life during our 4 day Wooden Surfboard Making course. We've had almost 200 students leaving with a brand new surfboard (and work of art), ready to be enjoyed along the coastlines of Australia and beyond. 

 

We've been lucky to host five courses throughout 2021 (even through the rollercoaster of the pandemic) and 12 new boards have been crafted into existence by a great bunch of eager board makers. 

 

Participating in our Surfboard Making course in person is an incomparable experience that will leave long lasting memories, new formed friendships and an array of woodworking skills. It's a great feeling to switch off from technology, get out of your regular routine, try a new skill and create something truly impressive with your very own hands. 

     

Operating from Brisbane, Queensland; class sizes are kept small and intimate, with expert guidance from Stuart, all materials are provided and no skills are required at all. Just an eagerness to learn and put your hands to work. 

 

Students craft their very own wooden surfboard through a structured but fun process that's been cultivated over a decade by Stuart at Bywater Surf, learning the finer points of shaping, the importance of a good glue up and the fundamentals of sanding a board to perfection. 

There's guaranteed to be a few laughs and lots of camaraderie throughout the course, producing inspired & stoked students by Day 4. 

 

Stuart offers professional glassing and resin coating at the end of the course, ensuring optimal versatility and longevity for each board. It's not uncommon for students to head straight to the beach after picking up their glassed board. Whether the boards get regular use in the surf or sit pretty in the pool room, they're bound to make for an iconic family heirloom one day.
