Chasing the Chill
We’ve waved goodbye to summer and now dance in the delight of magical autumn. With the cooler temps creeping in, we’re dreaming of the winter swell. It’s no secret that the cooler seasons are known for consistent swells, favourable offshore swells and powerful groundswells. Not to mention clearer waters, sunny days and thinner crowds. Finding a wave that can’t be surfed on a winter day is a rarity.
In South East Queensland we’re lucky to enjoy reasonable winter temperatures and our love for surfing doesn’t have to cease in the coldest months.
Surfing is often synonymous with summer, but with the right steamer, no water is too cold. An icy dip builds resilience and is known for its positive mental health benefits.
With a wooden surfboard under your feet, you'll be able to take on even the biggest swells with ease. The weight and stability of a wooden board mean that you can confidently take on any winter waves.
A way to keep your toes in warmer conditions but still within the surf-sphere, is to experience our 4 day wooden surfboard-making workshop this winter. Our June and August courses have several spots available where you can make your own board from Australian grown paulownia timber, featuring cedar or cambia if desired.
Conveniently running over 4 consecutive days (Thur - Sun) at our Boondall workshop, students are fully guided by expert Stuart and the Bywater team and will have their very own timber stick to enjoy. No experience is necessary, just enthusiasm!
Some surf clips to get you in the mood for some winter shreds!...
